Abstract

The primary objective of this research is to safeguard and enhance awareness surrounding the abundant cultural legacy of East Java by amalgamating facets of its varied traditions, less familiar to external audiences, such as the Remo dance and distinctive coffee-drinking practices of its inhabitants. Employing the intricate craft of ceramic carving, this investigation aims to encapsulate the robust, resolute, and fervent nature inherent in East Java. The study relies on the acquisition of data from historical and cultural sources, employing the IMO (inner, middle, outer) method for cultural identification, supplemented by interviews, observations, and exploration. The ultimate outcomes of this exploration yield two coffee sets that reflect the local customs of East Java, notably the unique practice of pouring coffee into the saucer—an increasingly rare phenomenon in urban areas. The design incorporates elements of the Remo dance and employs carving techniques, fusing visual, ideational, and auditory aspects of the dance into the coffee sets. This endeavor successfully melds both cultures into ceramic design, contributing to a broader understanding of East Java's traditions, as evidenced by user reviews.
